This take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic character has Sherlock Holmes fleeing London for present-day Manhattan after a stint in rehab. He arrives to find that his father has assigned a sober companion to live with him -- Dr. Joan Watson, a former surgeon who gave up medicine three years earlier after she lost a patient. Her life now centers around helping addicts stay clean. However, Holmes has his own plan for keeping on the straight and narrow, throwing himself into his work as a police consultant in New York City. The two find that they make a good team and are soon cracking some of the NYPD's most-difficult cases.

Elementary: Season 5 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Myles McNutt AV Club As someone who spent three seasons writing about the show here at The A.V. Club, it was nice to see the show able to take a deserved victory lap. Rated: B+ Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Elementary: Season 5 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Stuart Heritage Guardian Give Elementary a go. Dip in and out. Revel in the workaday mundanity of it. Swoon at the actual crime-solving he does. Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Elementary: Season 5 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Genevieve Valentine AV Club For the first time in a while, the show seems to understand the depth of its emotional debt; it's pulled in so much old hurt for these fights that there's no easy solution. Rated: A- Oct 11, 2017 Full Review Elementary: Season 5 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Mimi Wong Mediaversity Reviews A departure from many other long-running crime procedurals, Elementary deliberately avoids tired tropes. Audience Member I am not a fan of this season. They tend to build out a supporting actor in each season (i.e., Microft, Kity, Marlon, etc.) yet this season fails to build out Shinwell"s storyline or setting/world. I also think they could have done more when it came to building put Kitty's background Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member THE SERIES FOR ITSELF IS VERY GOOD, BUT I BELIVE THIS IS THE BEST SEASON YET. IT'S PRETTY FASCINATING AND EXCITING TO SEE THE CRIMES THEY SOLVE. THE ONLY THING I DO NOT LIKE IS THE CHARACTER OF NELSAN ELLIS CALLED SHINWELL JOHNSON. HE JUST ISN’T VERY SYMPATHIC AND HE SEEMS KIND OF DUMB. JUST LIKE A CHILD HE ALWAYS DOES THE THINGS HE WAS TOLD NOT TO DO AND HE NEVER LISTENS TO THE OTHER PERSONS AND ALSO HE DOESN’T TAKE HELP, EVEN IF IT’S OFFERED TO HIM ALL THE TIME.ITS KIND OF SAD, THAT WE DON'T SEE SHERLOCKS FATHER MORLAND AGAIN, BUT THAT’S JUST SOMETHING THE WRITERS DECIDED AND MAYBE WE WILL HEAR FROM HIM AGAIN IN SEASON 6.I ALSO LIKE, THAT KITTY IS BACK FOR ANOTHER ADVENTURE, AND THE ENDING OF THE SEASON IS JUST THRILLING. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It's becoming increasingly clear that the show's writers are uncomfortable and unwilling to address the existence of systemic racism, instead focusing on 'black-on-black' violence, or the few "bad apples" in the justice system (who generally happen to be black characters). The pro-police vibe of the show is incredibly tone deaf considering the recent problems with anti-black violence within the NYPD. No institution should be above social critique, but with each season the Elementary writers' biases become more obvious. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Holmes and Watson continue their crime solving partnership into a fifth season of Elementary. This season Holmes and Watson take on a new protégée, Shinwell Johnson, who they train to go undercover as an informant to take down his former gang. Additionally, Detective Marcus Bell has a romance with a DA and Holmes is preyed upon by a dangerous stalker. The cases-of-the-week have a fair amount of mystery and intrigue to them (some more than others), and tackle a number of topical issues. Also, several interesting guest stars are featured, including Castle's Jon Huertas, William Ragsdale, Christine Taylor, and Meat Loaf. Season 5 of Elementary is less ambitious and a bit of a comedown from the last few seasons, but it's still a pretty solid and enjoyable to watch. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Until now each season has only improved but this season seems to not live up to the first 4 seasons. I still wouldn't miss watching it each week but its not quite as crisp as the earlier seasons.
